Edgar Allan Poe (1809 – 1849) was an American writer, known for his novels and poems about the macabre. He is one of the first writers to earn a living thanks to his work. Poe is regarded as a central figure in the detective fiction genre, as well as in Romantic and Gothic literature. In France, he was translated by Baudelaire and Mallarmé, which helped make him more illustrious after his death.
